STRATEGY

The municipality of Catania, Sicily, required a visual identity that would unify the many local communities and businesses, and energise the tourism sector.
A visual identity was sought, that could be flexible and adapt across both digital and analogue touch points. 

DESIGN

S U N / S I T E created bespoke interchangeable icons using simple shapes that are easy to read and understand from any distance. These icons include a dashed ‘strata’ line, which references Catania’s rich layers of history and culture, as well as Mt Etna’s volcanic eruptions that have covered the city. The tagline, ‘uncover Catania’ invites the public to explore this idea. The colour palette reflects the iconic colours of Catania, inspired by its legendary natural environment, including Mt Etna and the Ionian Sea. Typography includes the sans serif font Lato, for its simplicity, Futura PT for clarity and readability, and the serif display font, Cormorant Garamond for its more traditional Baroque feel.
